A guy from St. Lawrence County was detained by New York State Police after fleeing the scene of a tragic motorbike crash last week.
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department arrested Herbert Planty, 44, of Canton, on Sunday at his residence in Potsdam.
According to investigators, the motorcycle operator, James McLean, 41, of Rensselaer Falls, was driving north on Stiles Road on the night of June 3 when he collided head-on with a pickup vehicle travelling in the other way while cresting a hill.
McLean was flung from the bike and sustained life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
The truck’s driver, Planty, and the passenger stepped out to check on McLean, but he escaped into the woods.
McLean was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he died from his injuries, according to authorities.
Planty has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused damage and death. He has also been penalised for many automobile and traffic issues.
He appeared in court and was ordered held in the St. Lawrence County Jail on $20,000 bail.
