A wrong-way crash early Sunday morning killed one person, according to a Colorado State Patrol announcement.
At 2:59 a.m., a trooper on I-25 near milepost 24 was nearly struck by a grey Chrysler van driving south in the northbound lanes.
The trooper reportedly attempted to initiate a traffic stop using emergency lights, but the van drove south.
CSP attempted to work with other agencies to intercept the car. When that failed, a supervisor reportedly directed the trooper to end the pursuit due to the mounting public safety danger.
According to troopers, the car was later involved in a fatal incident on I-25 near 20th Street in Denver around 4 a.m.
According to a social media post by Denver police, one person was pronounced dead at the site. Four people were brought to the hospital, three with severe injuries and one with moderate injuries.
The Denver Police Department will be looking into the crash. CSP will perform an administrative review of this project in accordance with agency policy.
