A lady was shot by Detroit police after reportedly firing rounds at a man who was repossessing a vehicle Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.
The incident occurred in the 10900 block of Nottingham shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 12.
Officers were on routine patrol when they observed a lady shooting at a guy and a truck, according to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.
The chief stated that the individual was in the process of repossessing a truck.
The repossession allegedly occurred on the next block, but the man drove the truck to Nottingham Street to secure the vehicle.
The chief believes the automobile owner attempted to stop the repossession and screamed something along the lines of “You’re stealing my car,” before shooting multiple shots at the man.
When the patrol officers noticed her shooting at the man, they fired at her.
The woman was struck many times and had non-life-threatening injuries, according to the chief.
The police chief was relieved that no one had been gravely harmed, including the repo man. He highlighted that fighting over property is never appropriate, particularly in a community with children.
The investigation is underway. Detectives are searching the area for witnesses and checking video footage from doorbell cameras.
Bettison stated that while it is too early to speculate on the woman’s motivations, the seized weapon and ammunition casings highlight the gravity of the issue.
In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month, the chief reminded the community to ponder the repercussions of gun violence. He reminded everyone that once a trigger is pulled, the bullet cannot be taken back.
A warrant request will be made to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
