On Friday night, Knox County Rural Metro Fire emergency responders responded to a three-vehicle incident on Maynardville Highway that killed one and badly injured three others.
According to Rural Metro, the crash occurred around 8 p.m. on the highway near the Union County boundary, near Loyston Road. Crews reported that the motorway was fully closed as they responded.
Three people were transported to a local hospital, and one was pronounced dead on the scene.
Rural Metro believes speed was a factor in the incident based on the damage. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office stated that the investigation is being handled by its traffic section, TANGO.
“Initial observations indicate that speed may have contributed to the crash. “TANGO is investigating to determine the exact cause,” KCSO stated. “Out of respect for family members who have not been notified, we will not release any names or post pictures of the vehicles involved.”
As of 10 p.m., the Tennessee Department of Transportation reported that the roadway at Loyston Road remained closed in both directions.
