1 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured in Chambers County Crash Involving 18-wheeler and SUV

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a crash involving an 18-wheeler and an SUV that killed a passenger and badly injured a driver, stopping Interstate 10 in Chambers County for four hours.

According to the preliminary crash investigation, at around 5:50 p.m., a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban was towing a trailer west, followed by a truck tractor semi-trailer, both moving in the outside lane.

According to reports, the truck tractor collided with the rear of the Chevrolet’s towing unit near mile marker 818 in Hankamer, causing the Chevrolet to spin around, contact the truck tractor’s left side, and come to a stop facing east on top of the concrete barrier.

The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to a Beaumont hospital for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries. The passenger was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Houston, where they died. Their information is not immediately available due to notification of their next of kin.

The DPS reports that Interstate 10 was fully reopened soon before 10 p.m.
