Interstate 4 south of Disney World reopened before 8 p.m. Monday after being stopped for hours due to a crash and major truck fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The westbound lanes reopened just after 7:30 p.m. The far left inside lane and Exit 58 to ChampionsGate remained closed for repairs and cleanup.
Traffic had been redirected from Exit 62 to World Drive. Eastbound lanes reopened shortly after 4 p.m., about six hours after the collision.
According to FDOT, the truck was carrying fertilizer, which is classified as a hazardous item. It occurred near mile marker 59, near ChampionsGate in Osceola County. Both drivers walked away unhurt.
Chopper 2 was on the site, where a vehicle had flipped on its side and crews were working to extinguish the flames.
FHP stated that lanes were stopped for a prolonged period for cleanup.
According to FHP, a Ford Focus was going in the center-outside westbound lane at mile marker 58, alongside the semi-truck.
“It is still being determined which vehicle left its lane of travel,” the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
The left side of Focus collided with the right side of the truck. This impact led the truck driver to lose control and slide off the road into the median, where it became completely engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Focus, a 29-year-old man from New Jersey, and the semi-truck driver, a 59-year-old guy from Polk City, were both unharmed and remained on the site.
