A child was killed and several people were injured in a crash that closed the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway at Bay Area Boulevard on Wednesday evening, according to police.
According to the Webster Police Department, a Chevrolet Sedan lost control, crossed multiple lanes of traffic, and collided with a concrete barrier shortly before 4 p.m.
At around 5:30 p.m., police confirmed that a small child had died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Authorities said multiple people were taken to the hospital with injuries, but the exact number and conditions are unknown.
SkyEye flew overhead as two Life Flight helicopters arrived on the scene and loaded the victims.
Officials from the city of Webster warned drivers that the freeway would be closed for a long time. All southbound traffic is being diverted to the West Bay Area Boulevard exit ramp.
Police are still investigating what caused the accident.
