A truck driver died and several road construction workers were injured after a crash on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Michigan, on Tuesday.
The crash occurred around 9 a.m. on I-75’s northbound lanes near the I-275 split in Frenchtown Township, north of Monroe, according to Michigan State Police.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, all northbound lanes were temporarily closed at Exit 18 / Nadeau Road and will remain closed at Exit 20 / I-275 until further notice. The highway was still closed in that area around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Traffic has been heavy on the nearby northbound section of US-24 / Telegraph Road.
MDOT crews were patching I-75’s left lane at the time of the crash, according to troopers. Two MDOT “attenuator vehicles” followed the crew, equipped with a system that provides impact protection to the vehicle if it is struck from behind.
The truck collided with one of the MDOT vehicles, jackknifed, and hit a second attenuator vehicle.
In the aftermath, aluminium cans spilt from the truck’s cargo area onto and across the highway.
The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His age and hometown are not yet known.
Several MDOT employees on the scene suffered minor injuries.
Troopers from the Monroe post, along with officers from the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, are investigating the crash.
The Frenchtown Township Fire Department was also on the scene.
