New Affordable Housing for Low-Income Seniors: New York City Opens Lottery for 53 Units

New York City, NY (DMN) – New York City has recently introduced a housing lottery for 53 units in a 14-story mixed-use building located in Soundview. The units, available at no cost, are specifically designated for low-income seniors, with at least one household member aged 62 or older.

The building, situated at 1940 Turnbull Ave., will feature a total of 154 units, with 101 units available at market rate. 53 units have been designated for seniors with incomes at 50% of the area median.

All 53 of the affordable units are studio apartments. The monthly rent is stated as zero, and each unit can accommodate up to two individuals.

Applicants must have a combined annual income that does not exceed $62,150. Residents can enjoy a range of amenities, including energy-efficient appliances, complimentary WiFi, a shared laundry room, package and bike storage lockers, air conditioning, an outdoor terrace, and security cameras. For the safety and convenience of older residents, each unit will be equipped with intercoms and a nurse call system. Tenants are required to cover the cost of electricity, which includes air conditioning.

The funding for this building is provided by the Senior Affordable Rental Apartment program of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, as well as the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program of the New York State Homes Community Renewal.

Meeting the housing and income size requirements is necessary for applicants. Units in New York City will be prioritized for residents. The deadline for submitting applications is Sept. 30.
