Everglades City, FL- Authorities in Southwest Florida are currently investigating a concerning incident that occurred near Everglades City on Monday. A package containing a significant amount of cocaine, valued at over $500,000, was discovered floating in the Gulf of Mexico. The authorities are diligently working to gather more information about this incident.
Boaters discovered a 56-pound package, roughly the size of a microwave oven, floating in mangroves near Panther Key close to Port of the Islands, as reported by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have discovered a significant amount of cocaine, valued at approximately $625,000, concealed within the package.
Authorities discovered the cocaine, which was encrusted with barnacles, suggesting that the package had spent a considerable amount of time submerged in water.
CCSO mentioned in a social media post that the cocaine package had similarities to the marijuana smuggling days in Collier County during the 1970s and 1980s, but it is not a common occurrence in present times.
Investigators from the CCSO’s vice and narcotics bureau are currently working to determine the origin of the cocaine, which they believe may have been brought in by the tides from the East Coast following recent storms.
According to the sheriff’s office, significant quantities of drugs, including marijuana, hashish, and cocaine, have been found floating in the waters near Miami and the Florida Keys.
