A woman passed away at the hospital following an incident where she injured an officer with a knife, prompting the officer to shoot her on Monday morning in Reston.
Police Chief Kevin Davis from Fairfax County reported that the officer’s body camera was turned on during the incident at the Reston Heights apartments on Sunrise Valley Drive. The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) shared details about the incident on the X platform at 11:06 a.m.
Davis announced during a press briefing that the woman’s healthcare provider requested a wellness check.
Officers are in the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston for an officer-involved shooting.

The chief stated that he examined all the footage captured by the officer’s camera. The officer introduced himself, but the woman closed the door on him. Davis reported that the officer continued to knock on the door, suggesting assistance for the woman who eventually opened it moments later. Davis reported that when the woman opened the door, she was armed with a knife and started to assault the officer, inflicting at least one cut to his face.
Davis stated that the video captures the officer adjusting his position and stepping back a few feet. The woman approached the officer, interrupting him. The officer repeatedly instructed her to drop the knife and cease her actions, at least eight times. A 33-year-old woman, described by Davis as 6’5″ and approximately 330 lbs., continued to approach the officer, leading the officer to discharge their weapon.
The woman collapsed on the ground. She was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. She passed away there.
Davis anticipated that the officer would heal from his injuries. He acknowledged that the woman had loved ones, and the impact of her loss is deeply felt by him and his team.
