Some changes to Amtrak’s Albany to New York City train schedule began on Monday. Amtrak implemented a 23% reduction in rail service in the Hudson Valley corridor.

This is due to a major repair project to two train tunnels that cross under the East River between Manhattan and Queens.

New York State Department of Transportation and Amtrak determined that there needs to be less train travel through the tunnels to make those repairs. The project is expected to last around three years.

It means three daily round trips between Albany and New York City will go away for now. The 23% reduction in rail service is also expected to increase layovers at the Amtrak Station in Rensselaer.

Passengers who ride the Adirondack or the Maple Leaf will have to sit and wait in the Rensselaer station for more than an hour.

Dan Levy will have a full report on the changes on WNYT.com and on our newscasts starting Live at 4.
