For travelers arriving at and leaving Key West International Airport, the lengthy, sweltering walk past construction barricades won’t linger forever.
By spring 2025, the packed departure area should be over, and there will be new food and drink options thanks to the new concourse and air-conditioned jetways to flights.
A year later, the other upgrades, such as the extended security checkpoint lines and the new baggage claim area, will be completed.
Since the project’s start in November 2022, the airport’s usage has grown steadily.
According to a news statement from Katie Atkins, the county’s airport communications manager, Key West International Airport began the fourth quarter of 2024 with a 10% increase in passengers thus far this year.
Richard Strickland, the county’s director of airports, anticipates that as air travel increases through the end of the year and airlines provide more nonstop flights to locations like Boston and Washington, D.C., the release states, passenger numbers will continue to surpass 2023, which has already seen nearly 1.2 million passengers use the airport this year.
This year, the number of people using the airport has increased by 107,115. The airport handled 92,051 passengers in October.
This year, we have continuously shattered records. As we construct a new concourse, Strickland stated, “It is a team effort and I can’t speak highly enough about the hard work that goes into our airport operations every single day.”
