Although there are hot patches, Great Barrington fire personnel have not observed any expansion of the Butternut Fire over the course of the night.
On its Facebook page, the department stated that it aimed to cut the last fire break connecting the eastern and western lines on Friday. That would theoretically put the fire under control. They won’t know for sure, though, until they are able to survey the landscape under sunny, dry conditions.
According to the agency, infrared scanning will be provided by the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing or another aviation organization.
Even though there has been around 1 inch of rain in the past 24 hours, the weather is still dry. There is still a burn ban in place.
