Trump-backed Derek Merrin concedes to Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur in Ohio

Ohio’s Columbus (AP) On Friday, her Republican opponent, who has been sponsored by Trump, claimed to have called Democratic U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur to concede loss in the 2024 election.

Fourth-term state representative Derek Merrin stated in a video uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, that he has no plans to seek for Kaptur’s seat again in two years, but that his immediate priorities are to relax and spend time with his family.

Official results released on Wednesday showed that Kaptur had won by over 2,300 votes, or 0.7% of the vote, ahead of Merrin in the battle for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District. As a result, the automatic recount that would have occurred at 0.5% was barely avoided. More over 4% of the vote went to libertarian Tom Pruss, whose campaign received almost $400,000 from the pro-Democrat Voter Protection Project.

Merrin cited the high cost of the campaign as proof that Republicans were willing to compete for the longest-serving member of Congress.

They spent more than $10 million against us, guys. That’s life, man, that’s politics, he added, adding that Democrats heavily criticized us in the media for nearly a hundred days after supporting a third-party candidate to steal our votes. We were lucky enough to have the funds to spread the word, and outside organizations were able to discuss Marcy’s record. In this manner, the struggle was largely fair, and I recognize that Marcy Kaptur received more votes than we did.

Merrin, whose tenure in the Legislature expires at the end of this year, promised to support the other Republican candidates who won the state. Among them are Bernie Moreno, who defeated seasoned Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, and President-elect Donald Trump, who won Ohio for the third time on November 5.

Merrin stated that although we were unable to win, our message and team throughout America prevailed. We stood up for our Constitution, battled for fiscal restraint, reduced taxes, and a vision for greater prosperity in northwest Ohio.
