Las Vegas (AP) According to 911 calls and officials, a guy in Las Vegas sought for police assistance during a home invasion before being shot and killed by an officer.
According to Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren, Brandon Durham contacted 911 early on November 12 to report that he and his 15-year-old daughter were hiding after someone broke into their house.
In audio records that KVVU-TV in Las Vegas was able to get this past week, Durham can be heard begging the dispatcher to send someone as soon as possible.
The 26-year-old officer who shot Durham was named by Koren as Alexander Bookman.
Bookman kicked in the front door as one of the first officers to arrive. According to Koren, the officer discovered Durham battling the burglar with a knife in a corridor.
The officer shouts for them to drop the knife before firing one round in a brief police body camera video clip. According to the footage, Durham and the invader both fall on the ground before the cop approaches and shoots five more shots while standing over them.
According to Koren, Durham, 43, passed away at home.
David Roger, general attorney for the union that represents Las Vegas police officers, was contacted by the Associated Press by email on Saturday to provide a statement on Bookman’s behalf.
According to Koren, the intruder and Durham were acquainted. After being taken into custody, the intruder was accused of assault and home invasion.
Durham’s family wants Bookman charged with the shooting and dismissed.
There was no danger from Mr. Durham. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Lee Merritt, a human rights lawyer for the family, stated during a press conference that there was no reason why force was used on Mr. Durham.
In a statement, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated that he was unable to comment on potential charges because the investigation was still in its early stages.
While the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department conducts its investigation, Bookman is on paid leave.
