Prosecutors demand maximum sentence for Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband in mammoth rape trial in France

AVIGNON, France (AP) — The massive rape trial in France entered a new phase Monday as prosecutors started outlining the convictions and penalties they’re seeking for dozens of men who are accused of raping Gis ée Pelicot while her husband drugged her and put her unconscious.

Prosecutors are summarizing the judgments they want for the 51 accused as the trial in the southern city of Avignon comes to a close after hearings that lasted almost three months.

Gis bert Pelicot, 71, began Monday’s discussion by concentrating on Dominique Pelicot, his husband of almost 50 years. He has admitted to putting sedatives in her food and drink for years in order to rape her and invite scores of strangers to do the same.

Prosecutor Laure Chabaud requested that Gis ela Pelicot’s now-ex-husband receive the maximum punishment of 20 years for aggravated rape. As the prosecution continued, the 72-year-old kept one hand on the handle of his cane and gazed down at the ground.

She stated that she had spent twenty years behind bars. It’s too much and too little.

It is anticipated that the court would render its decisions by December 20.
