Along with the ongoing twice-weekly collection, new 96-gallon garbage carts will shortly be delivered to unincorporated Monroe County and the cities of Marathon, Key Colony Beach, and Layton. Only rubbish collection will be done with the new carts. Yard waste will still be placed in regular cans, and recycling will be done in the blue carts.
Carts will be delivered to the Lower Keys (Stock Island south of the Seven Mile Bridge) residential/physical address on file with Monroe County starting this month, then to the Middle and Upper Keys starting in December.
Please wait until the week of December 29 to begin using the new carts, even though deliveries will be made throughout November and December.
Things to be aware of:
The carts will be dropped down at the curb. Please make sure your cart can be moved up next to your house, garage, back door, etc., by you or another person (such as a neighbor, renter, property manager, or friend). As a homeowner, it is your duty to keep the cart safe and secure. Please make arrangements to secure your cart following delivery if you are unable to do so.
Wait until the week of December 29 to begin using your cart. Although 32-gallon cans or containers should still be utilized for yard debris, they will no longer be an accepted method of garbage collection after this date.
To keep waste out of the hands of animals and the wind, lids should always be secured. Trash shouldn’t be put on the ground or on top of the lid. Put all of your trash on a cart. Trash that is not in the cart will not be collected.
Following collection, the cart needs to be relocated from the curbside and put back in the back yard, side yard, house corner, or below the house for safekeeping.
Carts that are lost, stolen, or destroyed must be replaced by the residents.
A 96-gallon cart will not be provided to residential communities (cooperatives, apartment complexes, condominiums, etc.) that receive Dumpster service. For inquiries, residential communities should get in touch with their neighborhood hauler.
