Washington (AP) By drafting additional soldiers and amending its mobilization regulations to permit the conscription of soldiers as young as 18, President Joe Biden’s administration is pressing Ukraine to rapidly expand its military.
The outgoing Democratic administration wants Ukraine to lower the mobilization age from the current 25 to 18 in order to increase the number of fighting-age men available to assist a severely outmanned Ukraine in its nearly three-year-old war with Russia, according to a senior Biden administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private consultations on Wednesday.
Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the White House has lobbied for more than $56 billion in security aid, and it anticipates sending billions more to Kyiv before Biden leaves office in a few months.
However, as time runs out, the Biden White House is also strengthening its position that Ukraine already has the weapons it needs and now needs to significantly boost its troops if it wants to continue fighting Russia.
According to the official, the U.S. administration thinks they will likely require more troops than the Ukrainians, who estimate they need roughly 160,000 more.
