SAN DIEGO (AP) According to an official on Tuesday, U.S. authorities arrested over 46,700 people for unlawfully crossing the border from Mexico in November, which is a record low for Joe Biden’s administration and down roughly 17% from October.
Predictions of a rise ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20 are called into question by the arrest total, which represented a drop of more than 80% from an all-time high of almost 250,000 in December.
According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the numbers are preliminary and not released to the public, U.S. authorities made roughly 700 arrests on the Canadian border in November, compared to 1,283 in October.
Trump pledged last week to enact broad new tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada as soon as he takes office in an attempt to fight narcotics and illegal immigration. President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico responded sharply to his tirade against an illegal migrant surge, pointing out the substantial decline this year.
After Mexican authorities stepped up enforcement within their own boundaries in December, U.S. arrests on the Mexican border decreased by around half. However, after the Biden administration imposed tough restrictions on asylum seekers at the border, the number of arrests fell by roughly half once more.
The November total was the lowest since July 2020, when there were 38,536 arrests, and was down 16% from the October total of 56,530. Additionally, it was lower every month during Trump’s first term as president, from October 2018 to August 2019.
