South Korea’s ruling party chief shows support for suspending presidential powers of Yoon

South Korea’s SEOUL (AP) The leader of South Korea’s ruling party declared on Friday that President Yoon Suk Yeol’s constitutional powers must be suspended.

People Power Party chairman Han Dong-hun’s remarks on Friday imply that his party may abandon its previous opposition to President Yoon’s impeachment for imposing martial law this week.

A joint resolution to impeach Yoonon for declaring martial law the night before was filed on Wednesday by the main opposition Democratic Party and several smaller opposition groups. The National Assembly swiftly overruled the president, compelling his Cabinet to suspend martial law before daylight on Wednesday, after it had been in place for almost six hours.

Han emphasized that Yoon’s presidential authority and duties must be suspended, citing intelligence indicating Yoon tried to employ military to capture and arrest prominent politicians when martial law was in effect.

The president poses a serious risk of taking drastic measures, such as retrying to impose martial law, which could endanger the Republic of Korea and its population, so Han stated it was imperative that Yoon’s presidential duties be immediately suspended.

Despite his criticism of Yoon’s announcement as unlawful, Han had previously stated that he would try to defeat the impeachment process. According to Han, it is necessary to stop unplanned chaos from harming supporters and citizens.

Two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 out of 300 members, would need to vote in favor of impeaching the president. Together, the opposition parties hold 192 seats. With the backing of 18 PPP legislators from an anti-Yoon faction within the party, Parliament decisively rejected martial law on Wednesday.

Yoon would be suspended pending the Constitutional Court’s decision on whether to remove him from office or reinstate his presidential authority if he were impeached. Han Duck-soo, the prime minister, would assume the duties of president.
