London (AP) In connection with the death of a 71-year-old diabetic lady who stopped taking insulin during one of his classes, an alternative healer who promoted slapping therapy as a treatment for a variety of illnesses was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday.
On the fourth day of a workshop in October 2016, Hongchi Xiao, 61, was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence for neglecting to seek medical attention for Danielle Carr-Gomm while she frothed at the mouth and howled in pain.
In order to get rid of toxic waste from the body, Xiao of Cloudbreak, California, advocated paida lajin therapy, which involved having patients repeatedly slap themselves. Although the method’s origins are in Chinese medicine, detractors claim it lacks scientific support and frequently leaves patients with bruising, bleeding, or worse.
Carr-Gomm was one of two patients of Xiao who passed away.
He had been found guilty of manslaughter in Australia, where he was extradited after a 6-year-old kid died after his parents stopped giving him his insulin after he attended one of his Sydney workshops.
During sentencing at Winchester Crown Court, Justice Robert Bright stated, “I consider you dangerous even though you do not share the characteristics of most other dangerous offenders.”
The judge stated that you were aware since the late afternoon of the first day that Danielle Carr-Gomm had ceased taking her insulin. You also made it apparent to her that you agreed with this.
Bright claimed that Xiao had exhibited no remorse while promoting paida lajin in prison and had only made a modest attempt to get Carr-Gomm to take her insulin after it was too late.
According to her son Matthew, Carr-Gomm was desperate to discover a treatment for her type 1 diabetes in 1999 that didn’t require her to inject herself with needles.
She looked for alternative therapies, and a few months prior to her passing, she had gone to a workshop led by Xiao in Bulgaria, where she too fell quite ill after stopping her prescription.
She did, however, create a video testimonial in which she referred to Xiao as a divine messenger who was launching a revolution to restore the people’s ability to heal themselves and transform the entire healthcare system.
When Carr-Gomm announced to the other attendees of the English retreat that she had quit taking her insulin, Xiao had praised her.
Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson stated that by the third day, Carr-Gomm was weak, exhausted, and throwing up. By the evening, she was screaming in agony and was unable to answer any questions.
When a chef wanted to call for an ambulance, she said she preferred to speak with someone who had experience with holistic healing.
According to Atkinson, those who had been taught and embraced the defendant’s beliefs misunderstood Mrs. Carr-Gomm’s illness as a crisis of healing.
