Trump calls for ‘immediate ceasefire’ in Ukraine after meeting Zelenskyy in Paris

Ukraine’s KYIV (AP) Shortly after meeting with Ukrainian and French officials in Paris, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump demanded an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine on Sunday, saying Kyiv wants to reach an agreement to stop the conflict that has lasted more than 1,000 days.

Trump said that both Kyiv and Moscow have lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers in a war that shouldn’t have begun in a post on his Truth Social website.

Negotiations should start as soon as possible, and there should be a truce. He urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to take action to cease the violence, saying that too many lives are being squandered needlessly and too many families are being shattered.

Trump’s comments followed what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently called a “constructive” meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.

Later that day, Zelenskyy told reporters that any peace agreement should only benefit Ukrainians, preventing Russia, Putin, or any other aggressors from making a comeback.

In a another social media post on Sunday, Zelenskyy claimed that since Moscow’s full-scale assault on February 24, 2022, Kyiv has lost 43,000 soldiers and that another 370,000 have been injured.

Western officials have stated that the last few months of grueling positional warfare in eastern Ukraine have resulted in historic fatalities for both sides, with tens of thousands killed and wounded each month. However, both Russia and Ukraine have been hesitant to release official casualty estimates.
