Person accused of accosting Rep. Nancy Mace at Capitol pleads not guilty to assault charge

Washington (AP) On Wednesday, a defendant in a misdemeanor assault allegation entered a not guilty plea to the charge of accosting U.S. Representative Nancy Mace in a Capitol Office building.

According to a police affidavit, witnesses reported that James McIntyre, 33, of Chicago, approached the South Carolina Republican in the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday night and then gave Mace a violent, exaggerated handshake.

In a court document, Mace, who is only identified by her initials, shared a series of social media posts regarding the incident. She thanked President-elect Donald Trump for phoning her on Wednesday morning to inquire on her well-being after claiming to have been physically assaulted at the Capitol.

As soon as the pain and soreness go away, I’ll be all right, Mace wrote.

According to the complaint, Mace refused to have a paramedic treat her following her interaction with McIntyre, who was taken into custody by the Capitol Police on Tuesday.

While shaking her hand, Mace informed the police that McIntyre had stated, “Trans youth serve advocacy.” A resolution that would forbid members and House staff from utilizing single-sex facilities other than those that correspond to their biological sex was put out by Mace last month. Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware and the first transgender person elected to Congress, is the target of the bill, according to Mace.

After McIntyre was arraigned in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, a magistrate judge ordered his release.

Attempts to contact McIntyre’s lawyer were not immediately successful.
