Washington (AP) After sustaining a brain bleed, U.S. Senate Chaplain Barry Black was admitted to the hospital and is anticipated to recover quickly, according to his office.
Black, 76, is being treated by the Capitol’s physician at a nearby hospital after suffering a subdural hematoma earlier this week, according to Black’s chief of staff, Rev. Lisa Schultz. Blood accumulation between the skull and the surface of the brain increases pressure on the brain, resulting in a subdural hematoma.
Black, who has served as the chaplain since 2003, is a well-known figure in the Senate’s corridors. He leads prayer groups and one-on-one meetings to offer advice to senators and staff, and he begins the daily proceedings with a prayer. In the past, he served as the Navy’s chaplains chief.
Black is renowned for his loud voice and his opening prayers, which are frequently appropriate and prophetic during tense political situations. He prayed to save us from the hypocrisy of trying to appear reasonable while being unreasonable during a protracted government shutdown in 2013. In a prayer before his first impeachment in 2019, former President Donald Trump urged our senators to avoid letting cynicism or weariness endanger long-standing friendships.
He called for unity when he ended a joint session in the middle of the night on January 7, 2021, following an attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters and the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election by Congress.
He prayed, “We mourn the destruction of the U.S. Capitol building, the loss of life, the bloodshed of innocent people, and the maze of dysfunction that threatens our democracy.”
