Pelosi has hip replacement surgery at a US military hospital in Germany after a fall

Washington (AP) After stumbling while attending an event in Luxembourg with fellow members of Congress, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi underwent hip replacement surgery on Saturday at a U.S. military hospital in Germany.

According to a statement from the California Democrat’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, Pelosi, 84, is recovering nicely.

Pelosi expressed gratitude to the staff for their exceptional care and generosity at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the hospital in Luxembourg, where she received treatment as well.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, she traveled to Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation.

According to persons familiar with Pelosi’s injury who spoke on condition of anonymity and were not permitted to publicly discuss the incident, she tripped and fell during an event, breaking her hip.

Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, who was on the trip, wrote on social media on Friday that he was hoping for Pelosi to recover quickly. That day, a group photo at the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg showed the two politicians holding hands.

In 1987, Pelosi was first elected. Although she resigned from her leadership position two years ago after serving as speaker twice, she continued to stay in Congress and was reelected in November to represent her San Francisco district.
