Police: Man arrested for Miami-Dade religious event shooting had stolen police revolver in BMW

On Tuesday, a man appeared in court to face charges for a gunshot that occurred during a religious function at a house in Allapattah.

According to police, someone threw a glass bottle during a confrontation on Jan. 6 at 2914 NW 22 Court, resulting in a shooting.

Police say surveillance video shows a man carrying a gun as he flees the house in a black BMW. Two people were shot. One was shot in the abdomen and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. The other was at the HCA Florida Mercy Hospital.

During the investigation, officers discovered five expended 9 mm shells at the murder scene and two stolen weapons in a BMW parked at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital.

According to the report, a detective discovered a 9mm black Smith & Wesson taken on Oct. 23 in Miami-Dade County, as well as a “silver.38 Colt official police revolver with a wooden handle” stolen in Miami Gardens in 2019.

Blood was also found in the car and on the ground in the hospital parking lot, according to the arrest report.

Police officials later identified Luis Benitez as a suspect and arrested him on Friday; correctional officers booked him on Saturday, and he remained at the Metrowest Detention Center on Tuesday without bond.

Benitez, 30, a Cuban, also has a hold from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to records. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder with a firearm and one count of grand theft of a firearm.
