Police are still looking for a New York motorist who drove to the edge of a pier near New York City Wednesday afternoon and then exited just before their car crashed into the Hudson River.
Investigators spent several hours searching for the automobile in the river.
At first, they were only able to find tire marks and car pieces spread in the snow along the historic Piermont Pier, according to News 12 Westchester.
On Thursday, the Piermont Police Department said that they had found the vehicle, but there was nothing odd inside and nobody.
Investigators are examining security footage from the event to try to identify the driver, who has yet to be located.
Martin McIntyre had gone by the iconic pier to snap a photograph but was turned away owing to the retrieval. He hypothesized why the emergency crews had responded.
“I mean, hypothermia would set it very quickly now should anybody find themselves in the water there,” he explained to News 12.
According to Scenic Hudson, the 4,000-foot-long pier was originally hand-built in the mid-1800s and served as the final station on the Erie Railroad, where passengers could transfer to boats bound for New York City.
Due to the water temperature and tide, police stated that the car would be pulled from the ocean another day.
Anyone with information regarding the odd occurrence can call Piermont police at (845) 359-0240.
