Iowa high school principal who was fatally wounded while protecting children dies of injuries

The Iowa high school principal who was shot and wounded while attempting to protect his students during a school shooting earlier this month has died as a result of his injuries, as stated by the school system.

Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was one of seven people injured in the incident on January 4. Authorities reported one youngster, 11-year-old sixth-grader Ahmir Jolliff, was killed.

Authorities said the accused gunman, a high school student, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Our entire state is devastated by the news of Dan Marburger’s death,” Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a statement released on Sunday. “Dan bravely put himself in danger to protect his students, eventually giving his life to save them.” He will be remembered for his unselfish and brave efforts forever. “Rest in peace, he.”

All flags in Iowa were ordered to be lowered to half-staff by Reynolds.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona expressed his sadness on X Sunday evening, saying he was “heartbroken” to learn of Marburger’s death.

“Dan died a hero, protecting his students from the tragic shooting on January 4th, something no educator should have to do,” Cardona went on to say. “May he rest in peace & may we honor his memory with action.”

Dan Marburger is more than just the principal of Perry High School. “Dan is a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend who lives and breathes for his family,” his family said on GoFundMe. “Being the principal at Perry High School since 1995, also means that Dan’s family includes those who have ever walked the halls of Perry High School.”

“Dan Marburger gave the ultimate sacrifice,” his family wrote in a GoFundMe post published on Sunday. “All of the Marburger family and the entire Perry Community will forever be touched by the selflessness of Mr. Marburger.”
