A 1-year-old boy died in Connecticut after being bitten by a dog, according to authorities. This is the second small child killed by a dog in the United States this week.
Police arrived shortly after 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday at a home in East Hartford where a youngster had been bitten many times by a dog, according to Officer Marc Caruso, a police spokesperson.
Emergency responders administered lifesaving measures and transported the infant to a hospital, but the boy died “despite the valiant efforts of medical professionals,” Caruso stated.
CBS affiliate WFSB-TV stated that the dog that attacked the youngster was a Dalmatian pit bull mix. Caruso said the death is being investigated, and two dogs have been removed from the home.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones as they mourn their loss,” he said. “May they find solace and strength during this challenging time.”
The killings came just days after an infant was killed and his parents were injured in a dog attack at their New Jersey home over the weekend.
According to Forbes, 30 to 50 people die each year from dog bites, with approximately 30% of fatal dog attacks involving a victim aged 1 to 4.
