On January 9, 1991, police arrested Aileen Wuornos when she was enjoying a beer at The Last Resort biker club in Port Orange, FL. She was detained on an outstanding warrant, but a decade later she was executed for the murder of six men.
Wuornos had become a divisive character. She was clearly a complicated, tragic figure (she grew up poor and sexually abused, claimed that the murders she committed were in self-defense as her johns attempted to rape her, and was poorly represented by an attorney who called himself “Dr. Legal”), and she was portrayed as such in the 2003 film Monster.
Given the rarity of female serial killers, Wuornos’ case received extensive media attention, but she was also notable for her final words before her execution in 2002: “Yes, I would just like to say I’m sailing with the rock, and I’ll be back, like Independence Day, with Jesus.” June 6, like the film. “Big mother ship and all, I’ll be back.”
Since the catastrophe, little has changed at The Last Resort. It’s still popular among bikers, and there’s a “Japanese garden” of motorcycles hanging from an ancient oak. However, the decor has been changed to commemorate Wuornos’ final drink here. Pictures of her adorn the walls, including a mug photograph. A painting on the bar’s brick wall displays her craggy face and a list of her victims. Perhaps less gracefully (but more deliciously), the bar has also branded its own “Crazed Killer Hot Sauce.”
