Speed Signs Installed on Hixson Pike After Collision: How Can Safety Be Improved?

In response to a recent crash on Hixson Pike, the Chattanooga Police Department has initiated the installation of speed signs along the roadway, aiming to curb speeding and enhance safety measures.

These newly implemented signs are equipped to gather data on traffic patterns, enabling CPD to strategically allocate resources for enforcing safe driving practices.

The decision to intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts comes in the aftermath of a serious four-vehicle collision that occurred on Saturday morning near Boy Scout Road on Hixson Pike. The crash involved a total of six individuals, resulting in injuries to five of them.

The incident unfolded on April 20, shortly before 10:30 a.m., causing significant disruptions to traffic flow as authorities responded to the scene. One person sustained life-threatening injuries, while another suffered serious injuries, with three individuals sustaining minor injuries.

The vehicles involved in the collision included a Chrysler 300, a Ford Escape, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a Rivian.

According to CPD’s preliminary investigation report, the sequence of events leading to the crash was as follows:

“A Chrysler 300 traveling southbound on Hixson Pike collided with the rear of a Ford Escape, causing the Ford Escape to spin and veer across the center lane. Subsequently, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Rivian 7FC, both traveling northbound, were struck by the Ford Escape as it crossed into their lanes. Following the initial impact, the Chrysler 300 continued southbound, crossing the center lane and colliding head-on with the Rivian 7FC.”

The collision prompted authorities to close off the affected stretch of Hixson Pike for approximately three hours, underscoring the severity of the incident and its impact on traffic flow.

In addition to the installation of speed signs, Chattanooga Police have vowed to implement further traffic enforcement measures across the city in the near future, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing road safety for all motorists and pedestrians.
