Threads introduces new feature that can filter offensive words throughout the app

Instagram’s Adam Mosseri unveiled a slew of new features for Meta’s text-focused social networking platform. Threads is expanding its Hidden Words feature, which now works in feeds, searches, user profiles, and post responses.

According to Instagram, the Hidden Words function on Threads automatically hides content that contains harsh words and phrases, even if they do not break the community guidelines. Previously, the Hidden Words functionality only functioned with post replies on Threads.

Moserri stated in a post:

Today, we’re expanding Hidden Words, which were previously limited to replies, so you can filter out undesired content from feeds, search, profiles, and post replies on Threads. We’re also testing techniques to limit who can cite you and the option to mute notifications for your postings. I hope these tools provide you greater control over your Threads experience while also keeping it a place for healthy conversation. Let me know what you think, especially if you are taking the tests.

To enable the Hidden Words feature, go to your profile page, press the Settings button in the top-right corner, then select Privacy > Hidden Words. Here, you can set Threads to automatically block inappropriate phrases. You can also include any custom word, phrase, or emoji that you do not wish to see on Threads.

Aside from that, the Instagram spin-off will allow you to mute post alerts and control who can quote your posts on the network. The two functions are presently being tested. Threads is also working on a number of additional features, including auto-archive posts, real-time search results, swipe right to favorite posts, a native camera button, and more.

During the Q1 2024 earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads had reached a new milestone, surpassing 150 million monthly active users. He noted that more than 3.2 billion individuals use at least one of Meta’s apps on a daily basis.
