Molinaro concedes race to Democrat Riley in NY-19

U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro has conceded the election to Democratic challenger Josh Riley.

Molinaro, the Republican incumbent, was trailing by about 4,000 votes with absentee ballots set to be counted. That process was set to start on Wednesday. NBC and the Associated Press had called the race, and Riley had declared victory.

Molinaro released a statement on Tuesday at 6:29 p.m.

“Our race didn’t go the way we had hoped, but let me tell you, I am so proud of what we’ve built together. This campaign was about more than just winning a seat; it was about standing up for the people who make this state great, who work hard, who love their families, and who believe in the promise of New York and this nation.

“To every volunteer who knocked on doors, made phone calls, and lifted this campaign on your shoulders — you are our backbone. We put forth a valiant effort — at last count we were outspent by $8 million dollars. The fact that we made the race this close is a testament to all of you. You put your hearts into it, and because of you, we made our voices heard. While we didn’t cross the finish line first, we fought for the values we hold dear, and I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you.”

He congratulated Riley in the statement, wishing him well.

“Josh, ran a tough race, and the people of this district have placed their faith in him. I wish you and your team success in serving our community, and I hope you’ll listen closely to the voices of every single person in this district. They’re counting on you.”

Molinaro was seeking his second term. He said that the last two years representing the district has been “an honor of a lifetime.”

With U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik accepting a role as UN ambassador in the Trump administration, a seat will be opening up in Congress.

When asked earlier in the day if Molinaro would pursue that seat, his campaign did not comment, only saying in a statement that:

“Elise Stefanik is a fighter, delivered big conservative results for the North Country, and will restore America’s credibility at the UN. Her successor has big shoes to fill and must be ready to help advance Trump’s agenda on day one.”
