Week 16 game between Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers flexed to Thursday night spot

The Los Angeles Chargers have earned a spot in prime time once more.

The Denver Broncos’ Week 16 home game against Justin Herbert and company has been moved from Sunday, December 22, to Thursday, December 19. This is the first time a game has been flexed to the Thursday night spot, according to Friday’s announcement.

Last season, the league changed its rules to allow teams to play more than one game on Amazon Prime Video’s 16-game package and to allow Thursday night games in Weeks 13 through 17 to be flexed with at least 28 days’ notice. Flexibility is limited to two games every season over the five-week span.

The Cleveland Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals game has been moved to Sunday afternoon due to the showdown of the AFC West division rivals who are both vying for postseason positions.

When the NFL schedule was announced in May, the Chargers were one of six teams without a Thursday game, even after Jim Harbaugh was hired as coach.

The Chargers are being flexed into prime time for the second time this season. Following the postponement of the Indianapolis Colts vs. New York Jets game, they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 last Sunday on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

The third meeting between brothers John and Jim Harbaugh as coaches takes place this week when Los Angeles, which is 7-3 and on a four-game winning run, meets Baltimore on Monday Night Football.

Sunday night is also the Chargers’ game against Kansas City on December 8.

In coach Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans, Denver (6-5) defeated the Saints 33-10 on a Thursday night, October 17. On December 2, the Broncos will play Cleveland on Monday night.

On October 13, the Chargers defeated the Broncos 23–16 in Denver. Harbaugh had an abnormal heartbeat during that game, so he went to the locker room for a short while.
