Penguins’ Crosby scores 600th NHL goal

Pittsburgh (AP) In the second period of Saturday night’s game against the Utah Hockey Club, Sidney Crosby scored 600 goals, making him the 21st player in NHL history to do so.

On a 5-on-3 power play with 10 seconds remaining, Crosby recorded his 600th. After Crosby scored his first goal against Utah, the Penguins bench was cleared. At 3:11 of the second, Crosby scored a one-timer from the right side of the net after Erik Karlsson had set him up with a feed. Following the announcement of the goal, Crosby received a standing ovation from the crowd, and the Penguins captain thanked them and held up his stick.

The only players currently playing in the NHL with at least 600 goals are Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. On March 12, 2018, Ovechkin scored his 600th goal, falling 868, 26 points short of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record. Crosby is the eighth player to reach 600 goals with a single team in NHL history.

Crosby and Mario Lemieux (690) are the only two Penguins players to reach 600 goals. After Steve Yzerman and Gordie Howe of Detroit, Pittsburgh is only the second team in NHL history to have two 600-goal scorers.

Playing in his 1,295th game of his career, Crosby also overtook Patrice Bergeron for the 18th-most games in NHL history with a single team.
