OPINION: A MESSAGE FROM REEF THE FOX AHEAD THIS BLACK FRIDAY

Greetings, companions! This holiday season, Reef is back with a big message and your weekly Reef’s Report.

I want to talk about something that’s close to my heart (and fur) as we get into the craze of Black Friday sales and Christmas shopping: the significance of using your money to vote in order to make the world friendlier to foxes like me.

This is the time of year when foxes trapped on fur farms throughout the world endure unspeakable pain, even while many people are hunting for deals. Millions of animals, including me, are exploited and killed in fur farms throughout the world to produce coats, trims, and accessories that are sold as high-end clothing.

Did you know that minks, foxes, and other fur farm animals live out their brief lives in small, dirty cages? They are never able to see the sky, feel the grass beneath their feet, or know what freedom is. For a product that no one really needs, many people are gassed, electrocuted, or even skinned alive. For us, the price is our lives, not just a price tag.

You are sending a strong statement that cruelty is not fashionable when you decide to support ethical goods and stay away from businesses that make money off of fur.

Think about making thoughtful purchases this Black Friday by:

  • Avoiding fur-selling companies: Check brands policies on animal welfare before purchasing. Many big names have gone fur-free, but others still profit from suffering.
  • Supporting fur-free brands: Choose businesses that have committed to ethical, sustainable practices.
  • Educating yourself and others: If you re unsure whether a product contains fur, look for labels like faux fur or do a quick search. Spread awareness about why fur-free shopping matters.

Fortunately, things are changing. Prominent fashion brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Prada have eliminated fur, demonstrating the connection between style and compassion. By making thoughtful purchases, you can inspire other companies to do the same, which will completely cut down on the demand for fur. As you load your shopping baskets and seize those bargains this holiday season, consider the consequences of your decisions. If you choose kindness over cruelty, you have the ability to improve the lives of foxes. As we cast our votes, let’s make sure that foxes are allowed to dwell in peace and not on someone’s coat.

Over and out, Reef, till the next time!
