Bell tower being demolished after fire at historic Albany church

Elijah Missionary Baptist Church’s ancient bell tower was being demolished on Friday.

Earlier this month, the 1880s-era church was completely destroyed by fire. According to authorities, the cause is a space heater.

Although authorities eventually stated that the damage was too great, there was still optimism that the bell tower may be saved.

Homeowners in the area have been cleaning up since feet of water used to put out the fires spilled into their basements.

On WNYT.com and in subsequent newscasts, NewsChannel 13 will update you on the demolition and the church’s future plans.
