HOUSTON (AP) Azeez Al-Shaair of Houston was given a three-game, unpaid suspension by the NFL on Tuesday for repeatedly breaking player safety regulations after hitting Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence in the head, causing a concussion.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan announced Al-Shaair’s sentence. Runyan informed Al-Shaair in his letter that he had received numerous infractions for personal fouls and regulations violations pertaining to sportsmanship in the previous seasons.
In the second quarter of Houston’s 23–20 victory on Sunday, Lawrence scrambled left on a second-and-7 play, returning to the starting lineup after missing two games due to a sprained left shoulder. Before Al-Shaair lifted his forearm and slammed into the helpless quarterback, he started a slide.
Following the impact, Lawrence clenched both fists in a manner known as the fencing reaction, which is frequently seen following traumatic brain injury. As teammates surrounded Al-Shaair in an attempt to defend him, he lay on the ground for a number of minutes.
