According to Mayor Kathy Sheehan, at least one child who broke through the ice in Albany’s Washington Park came from a migrant family that now resides in the Capital Region. As a result, they might not know the area as well.
A 12-year-old child died after falling through the ice, as NewsChannel 13 reported over the weekend. Then, as an 11-year-old girl raced out to try to save him, she fell through. At the hospital, she is currently in critical condition.
Once more, it serves as a reminder of how fleeting life can be and how crucial it is that we make sure our kids and everyone else in our community understand that going out onto the ice on any of the bodies of water in the city of Albany is not a safe thing to do, Sheehan said.
According to Sheehan, more warning signs in additional languages might be required.
Language barriers do still exist, so we put a lot of effort into printing materials in several languages and are committed to collaborating with the school district to make sure that all of the kids in the district understand how dangerous it is to walk out onto that ice, she said.
She claimed that teachers and children were meeting with the district’s crisis team to talk about the tragedy.
