Houston police are actively searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 19-year-old man on the Gulf Freeway late Monday night, despite the teen’s brother’s desperate attempt to prevent him from crossing the busy highway.
The fatal incident occurred around 10 p.m. on the northbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway near the South Loop. According to investigators, the teen and his brother were attempting to cross the main lanes when tragedy struck.
Authorities reported that the teen’s brother tried to stop him from crossing, but the 19-year-old was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop, fleeing the scene before witnesses could provide a description of the car.
Houston Police Department (HPD) officers discovered a piece of the suspect vehicle at the scene, which they hope will aid in identifying the driver responsible.
The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting law enforcement to divert all northbound traffic to eastbound 610 while they conducted their investigation.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle involved to contact the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
