IRS Refunds Top $162 Billion as April 15 Tax Deadline Approaches

As the April 15 tax filing deadline nears, over 70 million Americans have already submitted their returns, according to the latest figures released by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). While the number of tax filings has dipped slightly—down 1.7% compared to the same period last year—the amount of refunds issued has seen a significant boost.

So far, the IRS has refunded more than $162.992 billion, marking a 6.7% increase from the 2024 tax season. Of that total, approximately $160.9 billion was sent via direct deposit, continuing a trend toward faster, more secure refund methods.

In an economic climate marked by inflation and rising living costs, these refunds are providing welcome relief for many households. The average refund through direct deposit has reached $3,330, which is 4.8% higher than last year. Overall, the average refund in the 2025 tax season stands at $3,271, a 5.2% increase year-over-year.

Haven’t Filed Yet? There’s Still Time to Maximize Your Refund

For taxpayers who have not yet filed, the IRS recommends submitting returns electronically and opting for direct deposit. This combination ensures the fastest possible refund—as long as the return is complete, error-free, and filed on time. If these conditions are met, refunds typically arrive within 21 days or less. However, processing may take longer if the IRS requires additional review.

To track refund status, filers can use the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool, which updates regularly.

Estimated Refund Timeline

The IRS has also released a schedule estimating when refunds will be issued based on filing dates:

  • March 10 → March 31
  • March 11 → April 1
  • March 25 → April 15
