Georgia officials have arrested an elderly couple for the murder of a man discovered dead in his truck 24 years ago.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated that Gary Fowler, 74, and Mary Fowler, 73, of Chatsworth, had been charged with murder in connection with Travis Silvers’ death.
Silvers’ body was discovered in his truck in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant in Adairsville, Georgia, on March 10, 2001.
According to a Rome News-Tribune report from that year, Silvers, 51, of Kingston, died as a result of a deadly gunshot to the head. There was no weapon located in his automobile.
Another newspaper story at the time stated that police believed Silvers’ body was deliberately driven to the restaurant parking lot to be discovered by authorities. The deceased man was wrapped in a comforter and laying on the truck’s passenger side.
Police initially responded to the Wendy’s after receiving a report of a suspicious truck.
“Our examination of the interior of the truck found no gunpowder residue or bullet damage to the vehicle like you might expect if he was shot at close range inside the cab,” said Lieutenant Larry Miolen of the Adairsville Police Department at the time.
The Independent has contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for additional information.
The Fowlers are being held in the Bartow County Jail without bond. Officials did not explain how the pair is connected to the case. They have been booked into the Bartow County Jail.
