Two-vehicle Crash on U.S. 50 East of North Vernon Leaves One Dead, One Critically Injured

A 54-year-old Indiana man died and another was critically injured in a crash Thursday morning near North Vernon.

According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, the incident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 50 near Private Road 125 East, just east of North Vernon.

According to authorities, William Rabe, 54, was driving west on US 50 when he crossed the centerline for “an unknown reason,” colliding with another car in the eastbound lane.

Wheeles stated that the eastbound vehicle exited the south side of the road before coming to a stop. The man operating the vehicle was taken to St. Vincent/Jennings Hospital with critical injuries and then moved to St. Vincent-86th Street in Indianapolis for treatment. His current status was not specified.

Rabe was pronounced dead on the scene.

The ISP is assisting the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office with their continuing investigation into the collision.

Toxicology findings are still awaiting, but Wheeles said investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
