A woman wanted in connection with a fatal jet ski crash Memorial Day weekend was apprehended on Tuesday, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
According to authorities, Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez was driving a jet ski on Grapevine Lake when she allegedly collided with 18-year-old kayaker Ava Moore.
On Wednesday, May 28, officials convened a news conference to provide an update on the investigation and charges filed against the accused. According to Attorney General Ken Paxton, Gonzalez is an unauthorized immigrant.
“Ava Moore’s senseless death was caused by an illegal alien who should have never been in our country in the first place,” Paxton told reporters. “My heart aches for Ava’s family and friends, and my thoughts are with them as they deal with this tragedy. My administration will continue to collaborate with local, state, and national law enforcement to obtain justice for Ava.”
Paxton also stated that the individual who drove Gonzalez away after the collision is undocumented and has been apprehended.
According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, law enforcement officers from the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Dallas Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations assisted in the investigation. The police have not disclosed any information about probable charges.
According to law officials, the woman driving the jet ski fled the scene with a guy, who then collided into another automobile before driving away. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports that a passenger on the jet ski lingered at the site and spoke with officers.
According to a family member, Moore’s death has left them “completely devastated” and their “family will never be the same.”
Moore was transported to a hospital, where she died.
Lisa Scrabeck, who was at the lake, claimed she assisted Moore after she was hauled ashore. She checked Moore’s pulse and heartbeat and established that he was wearing a life jacket, which was removed before CPR began.
“She didn’t suffer in agony,” Scrabeck told CBS News Texas. “It is quite terrible, and I express my heartfelt condolences to the family. I can’t image being the parents of this little kid. But one thing I can assure you is that she did not suffer from the minute I saw her.”
Scrabeck also stated that she seen the women on the jet ski “driving recklessly” throughout the day.
