A Bend man was detained Friday after telling a family member he intended to carry out a mass shooting, Bend Police said Monday. The man was taken to the hospital and is being evaluated.
Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said the agency received a call Friday afternoon indicating that the man made the statement during an argument with family members. The suspect, 36, was also known to have several guns.
Officers went to the man’s residence on NE Waller Drive and found his truck in the driveway. Officers witnessed the guy leaving the home with an AR-15-style rifle and a duffle bag while wearing a ballistic vest, Miller said. He removed the vest, threw it in the truck, and attempted to leave.
Officers halted the truck before the suspect could flee and held the man at gunpoint. Miller claimed the subject complied without incident. He was taken into custody and brought to St. Charles. Miller said Monday he was still being evaluated.
He was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct II and unlawful use or carry of a weapon. He has not been formally charged. Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels said Monday that further charges could be filed after his office receives a referral from Bend Police.
Miller stated that authorities searched the suspect’s truck and home. They asked for and were given an Extreme Risk Protection Order, which is a court order that prohibits a person who is at risk of harming himself or others from possessing or gaining access to deadly weapons such as firearms.
