For several months, Child Protective Services withdrew a 3-year-old kid from his mother’s care, only to return him to her home. That ended in March, when the Wayne County Prosecutor announced the child’s death. Now his mother has been charged.
Brianna Simmons was charged on Monday with murder, torture, and child abuse in the death of her son, who died in March following repeated CPS removals.
Simmons was arraigned via Zoom on Monday, during which she did not say anything and her court-appointed attorney entered a not guilty plea.
According to authorities, when CPS removed the youngster from the family, the boy was injured at several points, including fractured bones.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor, Simmons allowed her lover to live and stay at the family home, assaulting her kid. The prosecutor also claimed she overlooked blatant maltreatment and visited five separate facilities to seek care for her son. According to the prosecutor, this was done to conceal the root cause of the child’s injuries.
Her boyfriend is currently not in custody, but charges are pending.
Simmons is being held without bond and has been ordered not to communicate with her elder children.
