A passenger in an SUV was killed when the car spun out and overturned, ejecting him out the window, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.
The accident occurred in rural Taylor County around 11 p.m. on June 21 on U.S. 98/U.S. 19 near Athena Road, roughly 10 miles south of Perry.
An SUV driven by a 44-year-old Cantonment man was headed north, according to FHP. The passengers were a Crestview woman, 48, and a Pensacola man, 54.
“The vehicle left the roadway, travelling into the centre grass median,” following which it “began to rotate clockwise and eventually re-entered the roadway,” according to the news release.
It left the road again, hitting a utility pole, spinning out, and overturning. According to FHP, the Pensacola guy was ejected while sitting in the rear seat without a seat belt. He was later pronounced dead at the spot.
The driver and another passenger, who were wearing seat belts, had minor injuries, according to the announcement. The Highway Patrol does not name crash victims in its news releases.
The northbound lanes of the roadway were temporarily closed but reopened by daybreak. The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Taylor County Fire Rescue, and Century EMS all assisted troopers on location.
