A woman was reportedly killed and a man was injured in a serious rollover accident early Sunday morning.
According to Wayne County Sheriff Randy Retter, crews were dispatched to I-70 East shortly after 1 a.m. following reports of a serious crash near the 137-mile marker.
When deputies arrived, they discovered that a small passenger car had veered off the road, collided with a steep embankment, flipped over, and crashed on its top, Sheriff Retter stated.
During a preliminary investigation of the scene, Retter stated that it was determined that the driver, 55-year-old Connie Jones, was ejected from the vehicle while the accident was occurring.
First responders from Reid Health and the local fire departments pronounced Jones dead on scene.
Leovigildo Muniz, 56, was Jones’ passenger and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to recover fully.
According to Retter, Muniz told officials on the scene that Jones drove to Indianapolis to pick him up after work, and while driving home, the car unexpectedly veered to the right, resulting in the crash.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the accident.
Retter stated that the interstate was closed for about three hours while first responders conducted their preliminary investigation.
