2 Dead After Head-on Crash With City Truck in Charlotte — Impairment Suspected

A head-on collision earlier this month killed two people, and police believe impaired driving may have played a role.

The fatal crash occurred just before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, in the 5900 block of Monroe Road in southeast Charlotte. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, a Honda Civic collided head-on with a Charlotte Water truck, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Christina Whitman, 55, the driver of the Civic, and her passenger, Theodore McCorkle, 64, were both taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Unfortunately, McCorkle was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. According to CMPD, Whitman died from her injuries eight days later, on June 20.

The driver of the Charlotte Water truck was also injured and hospitalised with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to CMPD.

According to police, the Honda was driving west on Monroe Road when it crossed the double yellow line and collided with the city truck head on. Detectives believe impairment may have contributed to the crash and are still investigating whether speed was also a factor.

This crash is still under investigation. Both families of the victims have been notified.
